@PumpUpThaVolume: Episode048 - Shake It Off

Sun, 2013-03-03 00:45
♫Makin' a soundtrack for another planet to hear♫" on @PumpUpThaVolume! Episode048 - Shake It Off was recorded at the home studios of MediaMonarchy.com and features brand new #SongOfTheDay sounds from Josh Ritter, Beach Fossils, Spinto Band, Little Ones, Local Natives, John Grant, Sin Fang, Amor de Dias, Big Harp, Carly Ritter, Wild Cub, Van Stee, Ballake Sissoko and Chromatics... because it can't be news and politics all the time!

Episode048: MP3/Feed\Archive

Previous: Episode047 - We Real Cool
****************************************
♬Liner Notes♬: This is another great set of nearly non-stop sounds from Local Natives, Josh Ritter, Chromatics and so much more... and the mix is pretty sweet, too, if I do say so myself - so sit back, put your headphones on and Pump Up Tha Volume!

Josh Ritter
"New Lover"
'The Beast In Its Tracks'
Pytheas, 2013
Note: NPR's First Listen says that "As one of the most thoughtful singer-songwriters around, Josh Ritter isn't one to write angry, over-the-top, knee-jerk breakup songs — even though his new album, The Beast in Its Tracks, was written entirely in response to his own recent divorce... In "New Lover," Ritter feigns best wishes en route to a bitterly funny punchline, and along the way backhandedly accepts what passes for responsibility."
(More Info)

Beach Fossils
"Careless"
'Clash The Truth'
Captured Tracks, 2013
Note: For the second week in a row we get new music from the band that song source KEXP says "Lead by Brooklyn musician Dustin Payseur, Beach Fossils’ dreamy guitar-driven pop is rooted as much in songcraft as much as it is in space... “Careless”, the first single from Clash The Truth, is a wistful, reverb-soaked tune... "
(More Info)

Spinto Band
"Shake It Off"
'Cool Cocoon'
Spintonic, 2013
Note: Last heard waay back on Episode018, the long-running indie band from Delaware returns to PUTV with a new record in less than a year since the last one. Pitchfork says "With its color wheel-spinning palette, sticky, curlicued melodies, and poignant lyrical reflections, Cool Cocoon is an occasionally breathtaking highwire walk between craft and genuine feeling that builds confidently on its predecessor."
(More Info)

Little Ones
"Little Souls"
'The Dawn Sang Along'
Branches Recording Collective, 2013
Note: "The cutesy indie pop sunshine emanating from The Dawn Sang Along could fit into commercials quite easily... The retro synths on “Little Souls” keep the listening easy, the comfortable breeze of ’80s pop melding with an equally lithe Caribbean rhythmic warmth."
(More Info)

Local Natives
"Breakers"
'Hummingbird'
Frenchkiss, 2013
Note: Again, song source KEXP says "Local Natives’ ornate blend of ’00s indie rock and beach-ready harmonies is as ebullient as it is propulsive... “Breakers” is as much of a reintroduction as it is a evolution; it’s the sound of a band losing their youthful naivety through personal loss, slowly recovering, and subsequently maturing, all in four minutes."
(More Info)

John Grant
"Black Belt"
'Pale Green Ghosts'
Partisan, 2013
Note: Stereogum says, "The former Czars frontman John Grant is a world traveler who’s made a ton of music in a bunch of different genres... But now Grant is living in Iceland, and he’s about to release a chilly disco-house album called Pale Green Ghosts, recorded with Biggi Veira of Gus Gus — and as it turns out, the style fits his voice perfectly."
(More Info)

Sin Fang
"Look At The Light"
'Flowers'
Morr, 2013
Note: We heard from Sin Fang back on Episode032 and, like song source KEXP says, "It wasn’t too long ago that we featured Sindri Már Sigfússon’s project Sin Fang for a Song of the Day podcast, but that was from his recent Half Dreams EP, a sort of gathering of inter-album strays. His newly released third full-length, Flowers, though, recorded and produced by Alex Somers (Sígur Rós, Jónsi), finds the ideas germinated throughout Sindri’s past career in full bloom."
(More Info)

Amor De Dias
"In The Winter Sun"
'The House at Sea'
Merge, 2013
Note: Last heard on Episode044, the duo returns to PUTV while "Recalling a breezy 70's aesthetic, Amor de Días is a collaborative effort between The Clientele's Alasdair MacLean and Spanish singer Lupe Núñez-Fernández. Their bilingual recording, The House at Sea, is filled with Spanish guitars and bittersweet songs."
(More Info)

Big Harp
"You Can't Save 'Em All"
'Chain Letters'
Saddle Creek, 2013
Note: "From the pained apathy of "You Can't Save 'Em All" to the cracked parade march of "Call Out the Cavalry, Strike Up the Band," Chain Letters finds the band enveloping and exploding their literate songs with fuzzed-out, needle-sharp textures."
(More Info)

Carly Ritter
"It Don't Come Easy"
'Carly Ritter'
Vanguard, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says "Carly Ritter grew up surrounded by music, but credits her extended musical family for the authentic sound on her debut self-titled recording. Backed by Juliette Commagere, Joachim Cooder, Robert Francis and legendary guitarist Ry Cooder, Ritter's songs hearken back to folk songs of the 60's." Meanwhile, her label's press release says "The rich, burnished, folk-rooted sound of Carly Ritter’s self-titled debut album makes it seem that this music was unearthed from a time capsule buried during the late ’60s, with its distinct echoes of Jackie DeShannon, Buffy Sainte-Marie, the Stone Poneys and, on one especially whimsical track, the Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazelwood partnership."
(More Info)

Wild Cub
"Color"
'Youth'
Big Light, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says "In a city defined by its musical exports, Nashville’s Wild Cub have made a name for themselves by, well, not sounding like they’re exports from Nashville... As its title implies, “Colour” is a vibrant and buzzing ode to reckless love that never collapses under its own ragged glory, and when Dewitt croons, “I need you alone... alone”, it’s hard not to be a little jealous of the 21st century Molly Ringwald that it was written for."
(More Info)

Van Stee
"Color In The Paper Planes"
'We Are'
Humans Win!, 2013
Note: Van Stee was featured on our very first episode! City Pages says that "For Charlie Van Stee, it took getting weird to get discovered... From those modest beginnings ultimately rose the album We Are, one of the more impressively produced and instantly impactful debuts by a Twin Cities band in recent memory. Running the gamut from drugged-out-but-danceable sonic experiments like the title track to instantly accessible and pristine indie-pop ("Color in the Paper Planes"), the quintet balances sweeping traditional songcraft with eccentric but effective detours."
(More Info)

Ballake Sissoko
"Kabou"
'At Peace'
Six Degrees, 2013
Note: NPR says "Two years ago, Malian musician Ballake Sissoko and French cellist Vincent Segal beguiled the NPR Music staff with their magical debut collaboration... After their initial project and ensuing tours that took them around the world together, Sissoko and Segal are still collaborators on this new album, called At Peace."
(More Info)

Chromatics
"Cherry"
'After Dark II'
Italians Do It Better, 2013
Note: And finally, we close out this week's episode with the return of Portland, Oregon's quartet to PUTV for the first time since Episode010. Song source KEXP says "Chromatics have given us some pretty stellar cuts over the years, so among singles like this one above, it’s hard to pick favorites... And with time, Chromatics only become more lovable and accessible, despite continuing to challenge themselves creatively. The Italians Do It Better compilation After Dark II hosts a few newly unfurled Chromatics tracks, and no doubt, “Cherry” is the cream of the crop."

@PumpUpThaVolume: #Episode047 - #WeRealCool

Sun, 2013-02-24 02:13
♫Makin' a soundtrack for another planet to hear♫" on @PumpUpThaVolume! Episode047 - We Real Cool was recorded at the home studios of MediaMonarchy.com and features brand new #SongOfTheDay sounds from Mount Moriah, Johnny Marr, Wild Yaks, Jamie Lidell, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Your Youth, Indians, Speck Mountain, Beach Fossils, Atlas Genius, Jenn Grant, Gloss, Deer Tracks and Animals at Night... because it can't be news and politics all the time!

Episode047: MP3/Feed\Archive

Previous: Episode046 - The Feeling Kind

****************************************
♬Liner Notes♬: Welcome back to another sweet slab of Brand new song of the day sounds from Johnny Marr, Nick Cave, Jamie Lidell, Indians, Atlas Genius and much more... Now let's sit back, put our headphones on and Pump Up Tha Volume!

Mount Moriah
"Bright Light"
'Miracle Temple'
Merge, 2013
Note: Pitchfork says "Mount Moriah are commonly identified as a collaboration between longtime friends/bandmates/business partners Heather McEntire and Jenks Miller, who have played in French pop band Un Deux Trois together, and run the indispensible Chapel Hill label Holidays for Quince. "Bright Light", the second release from their upcoming sophomore full-length and Merge debut Miracle Temple, shows the duo in fine form." BTW: I just scored a promo copy of their forthcoming full-length album.
(More Info)

Johnny Marr
"The Right Thing Right"
'The Messenger'
Sire, 2013
Note: The record label's press blurb says "Johnny Marr, one of the most celebrated guitarists in the history of contemporary music, presents his debut solo album, The Messenger. The album features Marr front & center on vocals & guitar, & represents our first chance to capture Johnny Marr s musical vision exactly as he envisioned on the first true solo album of his career. The Messenger was written & produced by Marr himself. Best known for his work alongside Morrissey as the creative force behind The Smiths, Marr has continued his career as an official member or touring guitarist for a diverse array of acclaimed bands since." Back in 2002, I got to see Johnny at the CMJ Music Marathon. He was only doing a Q&A at the conference, so I knew I had to go check it out. While waiting for the doors to open, I could see Les Claypool entering another hall for his Q&A! But I got in, sat in the front row, and was enraptured by Johnny. I didn't ask him a question, but I immediately hopped up to get an autograph and he signed my program and said "Hope you weren't bored!"
(More Info)

Wild Yaks
"Father"
'Million Years'
Ernest Jenning Record Co., 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says "To quote the New York Times, Brooklyn’s Wild Yaks are “a roman candle of a band” - they light up, shoot off, explode, and then fade out. What Wild Yaks lack in finesse is more than made up for in their enthusiasm, which in a post-Strokes world, is a refreshing change of attitude from the slew of too-cool indie rock bands. A highlight from their second album, Million Years, “Father” is a two minute, twenty four second tribute to... well, everything."
(More Info)

Jamie Lidell
"What A Shame"
'Jamie Lidell'
Warp/Fontana North, 2013
Note: Stereogum says "The willfully weird electro-soul loverman Jamie Lidell will release a self-titled album early next year, and he appears to be tapping deeper into his weird side than he’s done in a while. On first single “What A Shame,” he throws his honeyed falsetto all over a wriggling post-dubstep drunken monster of a track..."
(More Info)

Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds
"We Real Cool"
'Push The Sky Away'
Bad Seed Ltd., 2013
Note: The Clevescene music blog says our second track on PUTV from the latest Nick Cave record "returns to the band's gravelly sweet spot. Even at the heaviest points of the album, like in this tune, the music never seems to rise above a whisper." We last heard from the one and only Nick Cave a few weeks ago on Episode044.
(More Info)

Your Youth
"Thick Gold (Bodies)"
'Battery'
Old Flame Records, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says "A self-described “loud alternative band that doesn’t totally exist”, Your Youth combines all of 1994′s (the last year the word “alternative” meant anything) trademark sounds - lo-fi filters, anthemic slacker vocals, subtle pop melodies - and throws them into a garage-rock blender."
(More Info)

Indians
"I Am Haunted" (Jason Lytle Remix)
'Somewhere Else'
4AD, 2013
Note: Last heard on Episode043, the 4AD artist returns with an exclusive remix on KCRW. "It's a big year for Jason Lytle. He reunited with his band Grandaddy for a series of shows and now offers his take on "I Am Haunted" from 4AD artist Indians, the musical alter ego of Copenhagen resident Søren Løkke Juul."
(More Info)

Speck Mountain
"Badwater"
'Badwater'
Carrot Top, 2013
Note: "Formed in 2005 by vocalist Marie-Claire Balabanian and guitarist Karl Briedrick, Chicago’s Speck Mountain falls somewhere between the texture-based, psychedelic sounds of’60s and the ethereal, alluring haze of ’00s space rock."
(More Info)

Beach Fossils
"Generational Synthetic"
'Clash The Truth'
Captured Tracks, 2013
Note: Pitchfork says "Beach Fossils will followup 2011's What a Pleasure EP with a new full-length, Clash the Truth, via Captured Tracks. We've already heard "Careless" and now the band has shared the album's second cut, "Generational Synthetic", which finds a strong post-punk bass melody carrying along some relatively cutting sentiments from frontman Dustin Payseur."
(More Info)

Atlas Genius
"Centred on You"
'When It Was Now'
Warner Bros., 2013
Note: Last heard on Episode041, "Aussies Atlas Genius have been winning over fans worldwide for their catchy lyrics and buoyant beats."
(More Info)

Jenn Grant
"I've Got Your Fire"
'The Beautiful Wild'
Six Shooter, 2013
Note: "A veteran of the Nova Scotia music scene, Jenn Grant’s luminous voice has been soundtracking cold, lamp-lit nights since her 2005 debut... The second single from her fourth album, The Beautiful Wild, “I’ve Got Your Fire” is an ascending slow burn that floats on Grant’s ardent performance."
(More Info)

Gloss
"Ian's Dream"
'Front Porch' EP
Manic Pop!, 2013
Note: 1 For The People says about this Minneapolis quartet that "Since we first heard Gloss' "Front Porch", let's just say we've been waiting, fairly impatiently, for the next helping of "dreamy-ass jangle pop". It's now here in the form of "Ian's Dream", which will accompany the bands debut single, "Front Porch" on its physical release."
(More Info)

Deer Tracks
"W"
'The Archer Trilogy: PT.3'
Control Group, 2013
Note: CoS says that "On the final installment of their three-part debut, The Deer Tracks shed their doe eyes. While The Archer Trilogy Pt. 2 twitched around stilted epics, eerie lullabies, and acerbic pop bursts, Pt. 3 funnels the Swedish duo’s itchy wanderlust into a series of sinewy organisms."
(More Info)

Animals at Night
"Bare Feet and Summer Teeth"
'Animals at Night' EP
self-released, 2012
Note: And finally, song source KEXP says "“Bare Feet and Summer Teeth” starts the new EP off with a bang. Right off the bat, we get a smorgasbord of guitar noise all synchronized to form a pattern of sorts. This is only necessary until a driving drum kits pounds it’s way forward towards Markel’s first verse. Here, he sings with desperation as he name drops Queen Anne and describes the weird beauty of the Seattle summer."

@PumpUpThaVolume: Episode046 - The Feeling Kind

Sun, 2013-02-17 01:52
♫Makin' a soundtrack for another planet to hear♫" on @PumpUpThaVolume! Episode046 - The Feeling Kind was recorded at the home studios of MediaMonarchy.com and features brand new #SongOfTheDay sounds from Cheatahs, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, Gliss, Jenny O, Alice Russell, Goat, Pillowfight, Veronica Falls, Cayucas, Ultraísta, The Crystal Ark, Usonia and Vox Mod... because it can't be news and politics all the time!

Episode046: MP3/Feed\Archive

Previous: Episode045 - While I'm Alive

****************************************
♬Liner Notes♬: Another awesome episode with a lot of great new music from some of the most exciting new artists around... Put yr headphones on and Pump Up Tha Volume!

Cheatahs
"The Swan"
'Sans' EP
Wichita, 2012
Note: The Point Of Everything blog says "Here’s a throwback to the early 90s. Cheatahs are a London-based four piece featuring a German, an English guy, a Canadian and an American; there’s a joke in there somewhere. Wichita Recordings have signed them up and release their debut EP, Sans... Opening track ‘The Swan’ features loud guitars, a swirling riff underneath and a smokey chorus over the top."
(More Info)

Thao And The Get Down Stay Down
"The Feeling Kind"
'Holy Roller'
Ribbon, 2012
Note: Holy Moley, Thao And The Get Down Stay Down's album 'Holy Roller' makes its third appearance on PUTV! AllMusic says that "A few tracks into We the Common, singer/songwriter/bandleader Thao Nguyen bridges from verse to chorus on "The Feeling Kind" with the lyrics "Oh, honey look alive!/It's just human troubles in the modern times." This seemingly benign couplet actually speaks volumes for where Nguyen's head is at on this album and the general focus on the larger human community that defines its songs." Hey and I just learned that they're originally from Falls Church, Virginia... I been there!
(More Info)

Gliss
"Weight Of Love"
'Langsom Dans'
Modern Outsider, 2013
Note: The Phoenix says "If rock and roll is three chords and the truth, then the mutant genre offspring shoegaze can be summed up as one chord, three fuzzboxes, and a sullen, muttered bleat... But rather than rely on the typical shoegaze trope of kicking up the volume so loud that notes bleed into each other, tracks like album highlight "Weight of Love" are buoyed by a languorous and resigned mood that smothers rather than obliterates, an elevation of shrugged impertinence that threatens to blot out the sun."
(More Info)

Jenny O.
"Good Love"
'Automechanic'
Holy Trinity, 2013
Note: For the second week in a row, Jenny O. joins PUTV for another track from 'Automechanic'. Direct Current Music says "It seems only fitting that producer Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Dawes) went to the analog 2" tape to record Automechanic, the just-released debut longplayer from Los Angeles singer/songwriter Jenny O. While many of her LA-LA-land contemporaries can't think of anything finer than a perfectly modulated synth beat, Jenny O. is happiest pursuing the more organic 70's styled folk/pop sound of nearby Laurel Canyon."
(More Info)

Alice Russell
"For a While"
'To Dust'
Differ-ant/Tru Thoughts, 2013
Note: Last heard way back on Episode008 (back before we even had liner notes!), Alice Russell returns to PUTV with brand new sounds. Song source KCRW says "We've been waiting five years for a new solo recording from UK soul and blues singer Alice Russell. To Dust is worth the wait, as the lovelorn singer makes heartbreak sound sexy and danceable."
(More Info)

Goat
"Goatman"
'World Music'
Rocket, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says "Like another masked, vocally disorienting Swedish group (The Knife), Goat attack the listeners from all sides on “Goatman”, but the incorporation of African rhythms and Sabbath-esque waves of sludge make it a fascinating delusion to get lost in."
(More Info)

Pillowfight
"In The Afternoon"
'Pillowfight'
Bulk, 2013
Note: Another recent returner to PUTV is the new Dan The Automator joint! The SF Music Sluts blog says "Pillow Fight is a collaboration between long time Bay Area producer Dan the Automator and New York based folk-y/soul and songwriter Emily Wells. Dan was in the market for a female singer for his new project when mutual friend Kid Koala suggested Emily. Emily flew out to San Francisco for a 3-day recording marathon."
(More Info)

Veronica Falls
"Teenage"
'Waiting for Something to Happen'
Slumberland, 2013
Note: Their label (which is home to the awesome Violens) says "You may have had them tagged as goth-tinged pop fantasists, but with their much anticipated sophomore album ''Waiting For Something To Happen,'' Veronica Falls easily shrug off any notions of a difficult second album to create something that is easily more polished, more affecting, and more enduring than their peers could dream of making, and stake their claim as one of the most gloriously unpredictable and invaluable bands on the scene right now."
(More Info)

Cayucas
"High School Lover"
'Bigfoot'
Secretly Canadian, 2013
Note: Last heard on Episode041, Cayucas returns to PUTV right after announcing their upcoming full-length. Song source KCRW says "Named after a sleepy seaside town in San Luis Obispo, the band Cayucas captures that enigmatic dreamy California sound. Today's Top Tune is "High School Lover" about a girl who used to write love letters to lead singer Zach Yudin"
(More Info)

Ultraísta
"Bad Insect"
'Ultraísta'
Temporary Residence, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says "Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich and Beck's drummer Joey Waronker team up with vocalist Laura Bettinson as Ultraísta. Their impeccable self-titled debut is a lush mix leaning toward the avant garde in electronica."
(More Info)

The Crystal Ark
"We Came To"
'The Crystal Ark'
DFA, 2012
Note: Consequence Of Sound says that "In a post-LCD Soundsystem world, there’s an obvious dance punk void that just begs to be filled. Gavin Russom, the The Crystal Ark’s driving force alongside Viva Ruiz, toured with James Murphy and company for years, not to mention releasing his side projects on DFA Records. So even though the obvious comparisons beg to be made, The Crystal Ark, the project which Russom appears to be taking most seriously at this given moment, exists in a realm all its own."
(More Info)

Usonia
"How Does It Feel"
'What's Fresh'
UsoniA, 2013
Note: Minneapolis' City Pages says this band's sophomore record is "...A sublime slice of headphone-friendly pop, confidently encompassing everything from jagged-nerve new wave...to white-boy soul-rock with enough sass to make Hall & Oates burn with envy..."
(More Info)

Vox Mod
"Iridescent Asteroid Mists"
'SYN-ÆSTHETIC'
self-released, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP closes us out again with another Pacific Northwest artist "Scot Porter’s world is one that few of us can completely comprehend. His mixture of hip hop and spacey synth textures makes him a pretty unique figure on the Seattle scene. He’s been making ground-breaking tracks for more than a couple years now, but with SYN-AESTHETIC, his fifth full-length record, he’s taking a big step forward and inviting friends along for the ride." The maybe shoulda been our title track!

@PumpUpThaVolume: Episode045 - While I'm Alive

Sun, 2013-02-10 01:06
"♫Makin' a soundtrack for another planet to hear♫" on @PumpUpThaVolume! Episode045 - While I'm Alive was recorded at the home studios of MediaMonarchy.com and features brand new #SongOfTheDay sounds from Jenny O, Night Beds, Shugo Tokumaru, Bomba Estéreo, Adam Green and Binki Shapiro, Daughter, Thao and The Get Down Stay Down, Day, BRONCHO, Eels, The Staves, Junip, Aby Wolf and Starfucker... because it can't be news and politics all the time!

Episode045: MP3/Feed\Archive

Previous: Episode044 - Never Enough

****************************************
♬Liner Notes♬: Like I said last week - if you can find a more well-rounded, boundary-busting, cutting edge batch of music from all around the world - then please tell me about it! This week we've got brand new music from Jenny O, Daughter, Day and more - old tracks bubbling up by Junip and BRONCHO + return visits from Aby Wolf, Thao And The Get Down Stay Down, Adam Green and Binki Shapiro ... Now let's kick back, put our headphones on (and your winter clothes if you're on the poor east coast) and Pump Up Tha Volume!

Jenny O
"Learned My Lesson"
'Automechanic'
Holy Trinity, 2013
Note: "Jenny O. had a banner year in 2012 when songs from her EP were licensed for popular television shows, commercials and films. Now she is releasing Automechanic, her debut full length, which channels the sounds of SoCal in the mid-70's, in part thanks to producer/guitar hero Jonathan Wilson." Meanwhile, back in September, Boing Boing said "The new album is called Automechanic and though Jenny has been courted by record labels large and small, she opted to put it out on her own imprint, Holy Trinity, on February 5th. There’s a purity and a fire to Jenny O. that I find irresistible. Her almost child-like voice is an evocative counterpoint to the confidence and complexity of her music."
(More Info)

Night Beds
"Ramona"
'Country Sleep'
Dead Oceans, 2013
Note: The Hear Ya blog says "Night Beds is 23 y/o Winston Yellen who hasn’t had the most traditional path to a debut LP on one of the best labels in Dead Oceans. In the last 5 years or so, he has dropped out of school, self-released 3 rudimentary EPs, bounced around from state to state living out of his hatchback. Taking out a loan, Yellen rented an out-of-town, pre-civil war home in the woods that was previously owned by the late Johnny Cash and June Carter."
(More Info)

Shugo Tokumaru
"Katachi"
'In Focus?'
Polyvinyl, 2012
Note: Song source KCRW says that "Each song on Japanese multi-instrumentalist Shugo Tokumaru's new CD, In Focus?, employs no less than 20 instruments, all of which he performs himself. They all contribute to an imaginative album where he sets his inner child free."
(More Info)

Bomba Estéreo
"Pure Love"
'Elegancia Tropical'
Soundway, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says their new, third album "embraces Afro-Colombian influences into their looping, frenetic cultural mix. After a series of loops build during the intro, “Pure Love” places Saumet’s commanding vocals arrive front and center, instructing the world to come together in musical harmony and dance." And I have to say, I liked this song more and more the longer it went on.
(More Info)

Adam Green and Binki Shapiro
"Just To Make Me Feel Good"
'Adam Green and Binki Shapiro'
Rounder, 2013
Note: Last heard on Episode040 with their track "Here I Am", the Lee & Nancy throwback return to PUTV with the real single off of their self-titled debut. Pitchfork says "If you didn't know otherwise, you'd swear that Moldy Peach Adam Green and Little Joy vocalist (and sometime Beck collaborator) Binki Shapiro's self-titled album of duets was a collection of covers... It's safe to say that the sweet, simple luxuries of romantic 1960s pop will forever more be mined in some capacity, making the line between flattery and forgery a very fine one."

Daughter
"Smother"
'Smother/Run' single
Glassnote, 2013
Note: Pretty Much Amazing says "The word you were looking for here is “sweeping” – Tonra and her band effortlessly craft a slow, swelling build from tender guitar and piano chords into a massive, heart-rendering catharsis moment that might make your eyes a little misty. We’re blown away by Tonra’s songwriting – at just 21, she’s crafted a piece of absolutely breathtaking balladry." This track was also recently featured on 'The Vampire Diaries' TV show.

Thao and The Get Down Stay Down
"We The Common (For Valerie Bolden)"
'We the Common'
Ribbon, 2013
Note: Last heard with the "Holy Roller" title track to Episode040, the San Fran band returns to PUTV with the title track to their own album. Paste Magazine says "'We The Common' is a good time. It’s a completely painless, mood-lifting listen. I’m no doctor (and apparently my journalism degree doesn’t mean much anyway) but given the gray February reality outside your window today, I heartily recommend a dose or two of this album for a boost. I dare you to not let it help." But I don't know who Valerie Bolden is though...

Day
"Mama Shelter"
'Land of 1000 Chances'
PL70, 2013
Note: OkayPlayer says "This ain’t for everyone, but if you’re into good music, then you’ll like this. Day aka DJ Day just dropped this new jawn “Mama Shelter,” set to appear on his sophomore album, Land of 1000 Chances. The song references the famous hotel in Paris, France as well as the travels worldwide that helped shape this LP. Don’t waste your time trying to categorize the sound, just enjoy this shit... Land of 1000 Chances will be out February 12th via Thes One’s PL70 imprint."

BRONCHO
"Try Me Out Sometime"
'Can't Get Past The Lips'
self-released, 2011
Note: Song source KEXP says "“It’s not nostalgia, it’s natural,” says BRONCHO bassist Jonathan Ford, referring to the Oklahoma City band’s undeniably 70′s sound. The side-project of Starlight Mints keyboardist Ryan Lindsay, BRONCHO adheres to an style and work ethic highly reminiscent of punk forefathers, a comparison the band embraces with reverence and respect with the addendum that it’s anything but a tribute and all about the attitude. In control and in total style, their 10-song debut album clocks in at barely over 20 minutes in triumphant celebration of the foundations of the really loud and especially fast."

Eels
"New Alphabet/On The Ropes"
'Wonderful, Glorious'
E Works/Vagrant, 2013
Note: The second single from the 10th studio album from the long-running group. "The new Eels album, Wonderful Glorious, dropped this week on Vagrant Records, offering fans various packaging options, including a double 10-inch orange vinyl configuration. A world tour kicks off on February 14th in Santa Ana, California... The definition of Eels, as a band, has remained a fluid concept centered on the whims of singer-songwriter Mark Oliver Everett (a.k.a. "E") as they've unfolded over the past 17 years." But that's not all! We've also got another track off of 'Wonderful, Glorious' from another #SongOfTheDay source!

'Dead & Born & Gone'

Starfucker
"While I'm Alive"
'Miracle Mile'
Polyvinyl, 2013
Note: Ah, yes, we get to wrap up with one of Portland's best new-ish bands: Starfucker (or STRFKR if you're not nasty!) Exclaim says that "Following Starfucker's hefty 2011 tour schedule in support of their Reptilians LP, the Portland-based synth-pop partiers tucked themselves away in early 2012 to record a follow-up. That set has now been titled Miracle Mile, and it will arrive through Polyvinyl Records on February 19... The 15-song cycle supposedly features songs initially plotted out on a European tour and long van rides, with highlights said to include the disco-y "Atlantis" and the swagger-filled opener "While I'm Alive"..."

♬Liner Notes♬: Another amazing week of the full fifteen songs of brand new music from legends like Richard Thompson and Nick Cave and newcomers IO Echo, Foxygen, José James and much more... Let's Pump Up Tha Volume!

Whitehorse
"Devil's Got A Gun"
'The Fate Of The World Depends On This Kiss'
Six Shooter, 2012
Note: With one of the best album title's I've heard in a while, the Canadian duo has garnered great reviews. "Get between the smouldering desire of these two singer/songwriters and you will be crushed... It's their obvious passion, love and chemistry that makes these beautifully arranged, masterfully written alt-country love letters shine... It's the unexpected left turns that make this project exciting."
(More Info)

Richard Thompson
"Salford Sunday"
'Electric'
New West, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says "Guitar king Richard Thompson took his band to Nashville to record with producer Buddy Miller on his forthcoming album. 'Electric' demonstrates Thompson's signature picking style and highlights his songwriting."
(More Info)

Blackbird Blackbird
"All"
'Boracay Planet'
Lavish Habits, 2012
Note: Amazon says "Blackbird Blackbird is the moniker of San Francisco-based wünderkind Mikey Maramag. His unique style of dreamy folktronica recalls influences from all ends of the musical spectrum; deeply textured, hypnotic songs pay homage to psychedelic pop of the likes of Caribou and Washed Out, while the warmth of analogue instrumentation spliced with digital artifacts hints at contemporaries James Blake, Four Tet and Mount Kimbie."
(More Info)

Wake Owl
"Wild Country"
'Wild Country EP'
Vagrant, 2013
Note: The Music Ninja says "The beauty and perhaps the most inspiring quality about Wake Owl‘s Wild Country EP is its impeccable and delicate recording. Every single instrument used, brings forward the warmth and charisma of each guitar pluck, percussion and of course, the longing vocals..."
(More Info)

Hey Marseilles
"Heart Beats"
'Lines We Trace'
Onto Entertainment, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says "Seattle's Hey Marseilles deliver their brand of "folkestra" on Lines We Trace, their sophomore album, a sound reminiscent of The Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons." Meanwhile, another song source, KEXP, says: "This Seattle band’s second album is a gorgeous set of chamber folk-pop with a lush, acoustic-oriented sound combining cello, viola, trumpet, clarinet, accordion, piano, guitars and drums with Matt Bishop’s plaintive tenor and the band’s airy harmonies on beautifully crafted songs with poignant lyrics and heart-tugging melodies." Furthermore, Hey Marseilles just showed up on NPR's World Cafe and the Seattle band will also be playing here in Portland on March 2nd... Oh, and I just noticed that their Twitter link is misspelled on their website :(
(More Info)

IO Echo
"Ministry of Love"
'IO Echo' EP
IAMSOUND, 2012
Note: For the second week in a row we get a tantalyzing track from the LA duo's self-titled debut EP. Song source KEXP says the song is a "multi-layered, beautiful track that sounds like it belongs just as much in a nightclub as it does in a cathedral, “Ministry of Love” marries pop and shoegaze in a haunting union that bodes well for the duo’s forthcoming full length debut."
(More Info)

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
"Jubilee Street"
'Push The Sky Away'
Bad Seed Ltd., 2013
Note: Stereogum says "I’m not certain of many things in this life, but here’s one thing I know: I am going to enjoy Push The Sky Away, the new Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds album, when it arrives next month. Cave has already allowed us to hear its first single “We No Who U R” (and showed us its creeped-out Gaspar Noé video). And now we get a lyric video for the new song “Jubilee Street,” which, brilliantly, takes the form of a much-redacted CIA-style document. As for the song itself, it’s seven minutes of craggy and lecherous slow-burning decadence, and it’s every bit as stickily badass as that description implies."
(More Info)

Trixie Whitley
"Never Enough"
'Fourth Corner'
Strong Blood, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says "Trixie Whitley is the protégé of super producer Daniel Lanois. Her full-length debut, Fourth Corner, is named for the seasons of the year and the emotional cycles of life: love, rage, happiness and loneliness." And she's the daughter of the late Chris Whitley!
(More Info)

Fur
"Irreversible"
'Image On The Reverse'
self-released, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says "Combining the dark, immediate conviction of With Teeth-era Nine Inch Nails with the frantic turmoil of Turn on The Bright Lights-era Interpol, Detroit’s Fur is adept at channeling both the Motor City’s metallic chill and the Big Apple’s midnight noir into hook-laden bangers."
(More Info)

Amor De Dias
"Jeans Waving"
'The House at Sea'
Merge, 2013
Note: Pitchfork says "Amor De Días' 2011 debut, Street of the Love of Days, was a collection of soft-focus pop and Spanish folk sketches that drew attention away from its main selling point: the presence of Alasdair MacLean, frontman of the on-hiatus Clientele. The first single from Amor De Dias' sophomore bow, "Jean's Waving", possesses cutting, clean guitars and a sprightly tempo that recalls the later work of the Clientele, while MacLean's voice stops time completely as he reels off his favorite images -- houses passing by, streets, rain, and, of course, the memory of someone waving goodbye."
(More Info)

Foxygen
"Shuggie"
'We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace & Magic'
Jagjaguwar, 2012
Note: When their debut EP came out last summer, Pitchfork said "Foxygen haven't so much produced memorable songs as much as cool, disembodied sonic layers that might one day coalesce into memorable songs in your head if you listen to it enough." Now the full-length (with ANOTHER one of the better album titles I've heard in a while) is just out and one of the early reviews says "The freshness of the smell of this vinyl record is rivaled ONLY with the freshness of the sounds it produces!"
(More Info)

HAERTS
"Wings" single
self-released, 2013
Note: Song source KEXP says "HAERTS is a band from New York hailing from Germany, England, and the United States... As a one-off release, “Wings” is about as flawless as pop tunes come. The rhythm groove comes right off the top of 80s charts. It’s development is built like magic and the balance between control and 80s reverb overload"
(More Info)

Carroll
"Lead Balloon"
'Needs' EP
self-released, 2013
Note: Tiny Mix Tapes says that "While there are certainly bands and bards in 2013 hunting for ways to revolutionize melodies with unknown sounds and shapes, Carroll’s “Lead Balloon” propose that a crystal, honest voice and clean chords are all it takes to fully sate a certain set of aural needs."
(More Info)

José James
"Come to My Door"
'No Beginning No End'
Blue Note, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says "Sure to make many Top 10 lists this year, José James' new record, No Beginning No End, is sexy and sublime. It's been a KCRW favorite for months now and ["Come to My Door"] is one his most romantic songs"
(More Info)

Golden Gardens
"Transparent Things"
'How Brave The Hunted Wolves'
Neon Sigh, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says our closing track from this Seattle dreamgaze duo "is an absolutely-dreamlike song that slows down/speeds up/completely messes with time, trapping whatever it is you happen to be doing or not doing at that time and holding onto it in that moment for exactly three minutes and 11 seconds."
